Boxer Metal Tech Tip No.11

BMW 2 Valve Boxer Exhaust Nut Removal & Installation

You should remove the exhaust nuts once a year to clean the threads and apply more anti-seize paste. Skipping this step can lead to seized nuts, stripped threads, and costly repairs — don't let it happen to your Airhead.

Why It Matters

The exhaust nuts on BMW 2 Valve Boxer (Airhead) motorcycles are exposed to extreme heat cycles. Over time, heat causes the nuts to seize onto the cylinder head studs. Annual maintenance keeps them free and protects your threads.

What You'll Need

  • EME BMW 2 Valve Boxer Exhaust Nut Wrench (the proper tool for the job)
  • Anti-seize paste
  • Wire brush for thread cleaning

Step-by-Step

  1. Allow the engine to cool completely before starting.
  2. Use the EME Exhaust Nut Wrench to carefully loosen and remove each exhaust nut.
  3. Clean the threads on both the nut and the stud with a wire brush.
  4. Apply a fresh coat of anti-seize paste to the stud threads.
  5. Reinstall the exhaust nuts by hand first, then torque to spec using the wrench.

Pro Tip

Never use an improper tool on exhaust nuts — you risk rounding them off and creating a much bigger problem. The EME wrench is designed specifically for this job.
